The Bruins Ride The Wave
Friday night lights are back in the state of South Carolina, and week one saw a phenomenal, heavyweight matchup between the South Florence Bruins and the Summerville Green Wave. The Bruins started their season strong by beating cross-town rival West Florence last week, and this week went on the road and beat Summerville in a 22-21 overtime thriller.
The Game
The game was scoreless through the first quarter, until mid-second quarter when Bruins QB Messiah Jackson scored the opening touchdown and gave the Bruins a 7-0 lead. Then, before the half, Summerville came right back as Jayven Williams ran for a touchdown to even the score at 7 a piece. After half, it was a 7-7 game all the way until the 4th quarter when Messiah Jackson scored yet again to give the Bruins a 14-7 lead early in the 4th. Then, with just 2 minutes left in the game, the Green Wave punched in a touchdown and tied the game. The game went to overtime, and the Green Wave scored on the very first play. The Bruins needed a TD and PAT to just keep the game alive, and they got the TD when Jay’Aun Perkins scored to bring the game within one. South Florence head coach Drew Marlowe wasn’t playing for a tie; he was playing to win. They went for the 2-point conversion, and who else but Messiah Jackson punched it in to give the Bruins a huge 22-21 win.
The Defense
South Florence’s defense came to play tonight, especially in the secondary, as Amare Reaves had two big interceptions in the game. Defensive lineman Terry Gordon had a big-time 3rd down sack to get the Bruins' defense off the field. The stout and stingy defense also made the Green Wave turn the ball over on downs multiple times throughout this game.
Takeaways
The Bruins just went through a tough, physical, hard-earned win against a very good Summerville team. The Bruins did have a lot of penalties they will need to clean up, especially before region play starts. Overall, this is a major win early in the season and a huge confidence booster for Coach Marlowe and his Bruins.
