The Bruin Standard: South Florence Eyes Third State Title in Four Years
Own November: A saying that has become a staple for the South Florence Bruins and their head coach, Drew Marlowe. Take care of business during the season and in the region, but when it’s playoff time in November, it’s time to take it up a notch. The South Florence Bruins came into this season as the defending Class 4A State Champions, and their business-like mentality of week by week to get to their goal has led them back there yet again. The Bruins' season has been one of dominance; other than the one blemish to Northwestern in the middle of the season, the Bruins have steamrolled their way back to their fourth straight Lower State Championship as they faced the Gray Collegiate Academy Eagles, and with a win would punch their ticket and an opportunity to go back-to-back as the Class 4A State Champions.
The Game:
The Bruins did take care of business against the Eagles on Friday night, dominating 55-14, and punched their ticket to the Class 4A State Championship game for the fourth year in a row. QB Messiah Jackson had a big night as he accounted for 6 total touchdowns, with five being on the ground and one through the air to his main target, WR JayAun Perkins. Another guy who had a big night for the Bruins was DB Amare Reaves; he had a pick-six and returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Bruins RB Gabe McLaughlin also found the endzone to cap off yet another dominating win and the biggest win of the season.
What’s next?
The Bruins will now go play at South Carolina State University in the State Championship against the top ranked South Pointe Stallions on Saturday. The kickoff will be at 12pm
