CLEMSON SPRING WRITEUP

Clemson Football Spring Wrap-Up

Clemson entered this spring with arguably the most hype it has seen in years. Despite rumors of players entering the transfer portal and the NFL draft, the Tigers were able to retain a significant portion of their roster. In addition, they added three new transfers: Tristan Smith, Will Heldt, and Jeremiah Alexander.

Clemson's 2025 recruiting class took a significant hit with several top recruits decommitting, leaving Dabo Swinney with no choice but to turn to the transfer portal. While Dabo has consistently emphasized that Clemson has used the portal in the past and isn’t afraid to do so again, many fans were initially skeptical of his stance. However, this year, it became clear that Dabo was not only open to but actively utilizing the portal to strengthen his team.

On the field, the Tigers have looked strong during the spring, but Dabo has privately critiqued certain areas of the team. Notably, he publicly addressed his concerns about the defensive backs, and sources suggest he has been equally intense with them behind closed doors.

One bright spot has been freshman Gideon Davidson, who has impressed coaches and has likely influenced the Tigers' decision not to pursue a running back in the portal. Adding a running back could have potentially jeopardized their standing with Gideon, who has become a key piece in their future plans.

A few additional notes: Coach Tom Allen was reportedly displeased after reviewing last year’s practice film, though early signs this spring are promising. Thankfully for Clemson, Allen appears fully committed to building a championship-caliber defense.
