Major shakeup in SChsl Reclassification

The South Carolina High School League has announced the reclassification for schools until 2028, and some of these moves have major implications. As Class 5A will have just one division rather than two, it will have some new teams that will be looking to make some noise. The new reclassification saw powerhouse schools like Irmo, TL Hanna, and Gaffney move from Class 5A down to 4A. The Gray Collegiate War Eagles are moving from 4A to 5A. The major shakeup comes with the South Florence Bruins, after being in four consecutive 4A state titles and winning two of them, the Bruins will now make the jump to the highest division in the SCHSL at 5A.

What does this mean for the Bruins?

The Bruins will now be facing the highest competition in the state of South Carolina. Schools like Dutch Fork, Northwestern, Dorman, and many more. This also means the game against bitter, cross-town rival West Florence will now be a region game for the first time in a few years. The Bruins have been at the top of the mountain in 4A since 2022. This will be the first time in a while that they will not be the favorites to win the State Championship. It is also very possible that the four consecutive State Championship game appearance streak is also in jeopardy. The schedule has not been released yet, but you already know that it’s going to be a gauntlet and that every game will be of utmost importance. 

Other reclassifications: 

Wilson stayed in 4A and will be competing against some tough schools, such as AC Flora, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, and Irmo. Other schools that are in 4A but are more upstate that Wilson could also face off against are teams like Gaffney, Nation Ford, and Catawba Ridge, who all dropped from 5A. Greenville, South Pointe, and more. Hartsville and Darlington both dropped from 4A to 3A, and they will play schools such as Camden, Oceanside Collegiate, and Gilbert.
